Issues with Tyrian GMC and non-existant leeway
Recently me and my fiancee started to play again with our old project, which was stuck into Southern Shiverpeaks/Ring of Fire Islands: my mesmer and his necro which never gets apart, they do everything together. Characters are 10 months old, probably soon turning to 11 months, Tyrian born.
Yesterday we were doing two last missions in Tyria, hoping to get our GMC by the time we're finished kicking Lich. But when we ended back to Droknar's Forge I had still 0.8% missing and my fiancee had 0.9% missing. Eventually after hours of eye and Photoshop comparising we managed to get me to 100% but my fiancee is still stucked into 99.9%.
Where is this so much talked about leeway? These two were created after Battle Islands were introduced (But before Factions was released), so no entrance to high-level arenas was possible. They have bits of Ascalon and Shiverpeak arenas revelaled due low level PvP fun. I am fully aware that there's people who has got their Tyrian GMC without ever setting their foot on Lornar's Pass or Hell's Precipice but all those ones I've seen, heard or read about this far has been Canthan or Elonian born characters.
I already have 3 Tyrian GMC titles now and one character in 96% with lots or blur on her map. Difference between those 2x100% & 96% and my mesmer's 100% is that those three other characters has bits and bobs of high-level arenas revealed, which helps to get towards GMC.
This leads me to conclusion that leeway for Tyrian born (old) characters is practically non-existant. Anet seems to think that every Tyrian born character created pre-Factions has been in every PvP arena recardless. Which brings up question why PvE based title should be depending about PvP in a first place? Even if we would be able to enter arenas, we still wouldn't be able to reveal as big chunk of blur as Lornar's Pass is, which proves the point that non-Tyrian born characters has bigger leeway. I don't have post-Factions created Tyrian born characters, so I don't know about their leeway but for old ones there is no leeway.
I attach my fiancee's necro's 99.9% map here and everyone who knows how to compare by using eyes or Photoshop have to agree that there is not as big leeway as Lornar's Pass. Actually - I say it again - there is no leeway at all. And remember, no access to arenas is possible anymore, so those areas cannot be counted or stated as a leeway.
Please write your comments and thoughts and feel free to try to spot missing 0.1% from that map. Even better if you would tell it to me, because after countless hours of wall-licking in many places, we weren't able to find it.
Also to Anet: Please tell you seriously doesn't think that in order to get GMC for Tyrian born character in their own homeland they must've done high-level PvP even while they haven't reached Lion's Arch by the time you introduced Battle Islands.

All I can say is that leeway does exist.
Proof is in the map.
I used my map for the comparison and I've never been inside any PvP arena in Tyria.
The GMC titles can get very frustrating. I fully understand as I have one from each continent.

Leeway does exist and is quite big....
I got my TGMC today and when I hit 100%, I still had like 50% of Talus Chute, havent hugged Ice Caves of Sorrow and never even been to Ice Dome. Also, I've never been to any of the closed arenas and I haven't used Traversal/Rebirth.
The problem with Tyrian map is that there are parts of the map that count as uncovered but don't change color/facture.... Thats why PS is not always a solution.

Thanks for your posts.
Wobrak:
We've been in most of those places already, hugged, licked, gave wall some proper love, but nothing, still in 99.9%. Altho there is couple of places which we could go to check, thanks for that.
And I know they can be very frustrating, I have 3xTyria, 4xCantha and 2xElona this far, but I still think Tyria is most difficult one.
Cherrie:
May I ask when you've created your character you got your TGMC today with and which campaign born that character is? My point here is that there seems to be no leeway for (old) Tyrian born characters. At least not as big as half of Talus Chute because arenas are unaccessible.

My character is Tyrian born, created 8 months ago - never been to any of the arenas either.
Here is ss I took when I hit 100, still at Talus:

Ok, next question: Was Factions already released when you created your character? I'm just trying to figure out why you was able to get 100% with that much unscouted and my fiancee isn't. He created his necro before Factions release so could it be that when they released Factions they changed that how much leeway there is in the map?
Even those bits which Wobrak pointed out isn't enought to cover 50% of Talus Chute and whole of Ice Dome.

Update: We finally managed to get 100% for my fiancee! Got it from Deldrimor Bowl's western wall.
We also made eye comparising to his map against Wobrak's highlights. There is still tiny little bits of blur, but I still think they are not enough to cover even Ice Dome.
Even now when case is closed in terms of my fiancee got his 100% I wish people would carry on discussion about this, because it seems so weird that others has so much bigger leeway than others.
Also my fiancee wants to say big thanks you to Wobrak, thank you for your help .
And still, again to Anet: What and why? Please explain why?

BlackAngel, I did not have the leeway of half of Talus Chute, but I also didn't have the inside of Yak's or Ascalon arenas. I didn't realize there was so much leeway for some people!! (My char was created just after release of Proph in 2005).
hellmary, you can do map comparisons, but IMHO the easiest place to begin--and where I got my last .2% I needed--is to visit all towns and scrape, scrape, scrape, inside them first. The prospect of re-exploring/re-running/re-scraping in a zone was very unappealing to me. Maybe I just got lucky

From my experience, the leeway is same for everyone.
If you pay attention to your minimap while hugging the walls you'll notice that some areas don't seem to uncover - they look same before and after you've first reached them, BUT they still do count, the problem is - there's no way to tell wheter you've uncovered them or not from looking at the map. I've done pretty decent hugging at all other areas and I guess thats where those % are from.
Angel, I don't remember when my char was created - this was around Factions premiere. If I find out wheter that was before or after, I'll let you know.

h e l l m a r y:
There is proper thread for people who wants mapping help, it's sticky in this forum, please post your request there. I created this thread for leeway discussion.
Sofonisba:
Your experience supports the theory that pre-Factions created characters has less leeway than newer ones. Ascalon and Shiverpeak arenas aint that big.
Cherrie:
I thought also that it's same for everyone, but now it seems that it's not, as you can read from one of my previous posts this wasn't my first GMC, nor my fiancee's, so we know how carefully you have to lick the walls in order to archieve it. Would also be very helpfull if you could dig out info (screenie of your character in pre-sear and check on which day picture has been taken?) when you created your character.
Anyone else has had problems in lack of leeway? Let us know, maybe Anet takes notice then also. I agree that GMC shouldn't be easy to get, but when you have to use magnifying glass to discover tiniest bit of blur and use Photoshop and other methods which are not related to game itself, I think it gets ridiculous.

Yup as stated by so many people here, the GMC title does leave a bit of lee way for all. My Ele made it without any of the PVP spots. I had cleared quite a bit after I reached my 100% though as well. A lot of it is wall creeping but you need to be slow because some of these spots only open at certain angles
Grats on reaching the GMC btw !
For any others, please visit the stickied thread instead

Remember we have a mapping thread. Please don't post maps and start dicussing things here.
There is some leeway, but its only about 0.5 - 1 % compared to the massive amount of get in Nightfall.

Thanks for posts again.
Luciora:
Thank you, from both of us .
Cherrie:
So we both didn't had PvP arenas scouted, we both are experienced cartographers and know how carefully you have to lick the walls, that's in common.
You had leeway as big as Ice Dome and bits of Talus Chute, me and my fiancee have barely any blur in whole map. Your character is post-Factions, our characters are pre-Factions, that's the difference.
I'm not Anet dev, so I can't say anything for sure, but that seems like that they've changed amount of leeway for Tyria when Factions was released.
And thank you, I got it easier than my fiancee, it was real pain to find last 0.1% for him. After he hit 99.9% he cleared out ~8 chunks of blur before getting that last 0.1% from all over the map.
RTSFirebat:
Yep, there is sticky thread for map discussion and getting help, with this thread I try to figure out is there really different leeway in Tyria for pre- and post-Factions created Tyrian characters.
More experiences and info is welcomed, would be most helpfull if you would tell how much you had blur in your map when you hit 100% (whole Lornar's Pass or just tiny little chunks somewhere) and is your character pre- or post-Factions created. And of course your character has to be Tyrian born, because all other campaign born characters are naturally post-Factions created.
Of course I don't mind if one of the devs would come here and tell how things really are, cause this issue has really started to bug me .

well, i must say that as I get closer and closer to teh gmc title the supposed leeway seems to be disappearing. I'm playing on an 11 month (almost one year) old character, tyrian born.
I'm at 94% right now, and see various areas of hte jungle I still need to uncover, however I have scraped and re-scraped everything else. and whats left in the jungle doesnt seem to add up to 6%. I've heard hte reports of people getting 100% without ever setting foot in lornar's pass, which is unbelievable from my position as I mapped lornar's pass completely and it is not small by any means. That zone got me about 2.5%... I'm just not seeing 2.5% worth of leeway in what I have left on my map.

So we have another old Tyrian character who doesn't seem to have hardly any leeway. Have you scouted PvP arenas at all? Had that character even reached Lion's Arch before Battle islands were introduced? Your character is bit older than my mesmer and my fiancee's necro and Battle Islands were already there when we created our characters.

Sorry that this post won't help (it's been quite a while since I got Tyrian GMC, and I don't care to look back on that somewhat unpleasant experience), I just wanted to add this:
the Tyrian map was designed well before the title, and it didn't have that in mind. What that means is that there are TONS of very tiny crags that are kind of tough to hug, plus a few tricky ones that are concealed or don't look like you'd be able to travel into them. Ch 2 and 3 did, and it's much more obvious how to get the title.

VitisVinifera.
Exactly. The fact that Tyria is so tricky to scout also makes me think that they've made leeway bigger due Factions release so this title would be bit easier to archieve. Downside is that characters created before this change didn't got benefit from it, because devs can't change existing maps and how many percent of those is already scouted before titles were introduced, can they?

VitisVinifera: thats exactly how I felt about Tyria's map, but when BlackAngel underlined he got TGMC before without such issues, it made me think he may have a point.
BlackAngel: I think they can change anything, but tehy might think it too much of a trouble and not that important, since people reach 100% anyways.
